So I am installing a Yamaha Digital tach on my boat to go with the new 90 2s. I have some questions that I need help with if you are in the know...

1. I have two plug-in wire "boxes" that are supposed to go into the engine and plug in to the trim/tilt plugs. Problem is I can only find one whitish plug box to mate them with. Where does the other plug live? I have found the mate for the male but not the female. In fact I dont even see any wires the same color anywhere? I cant find it anywhere and am going nuts!!

2. I wired up the harness and it has one black lead extra. It is in between the tach and the control box close to the tach? Why is this extra and where does it go?

3. I unplugged the yellow wire from the control box and put in the yellow plug for the tach. The wire that was in there was for switch power on the fuel guage. Can I plug the fuel guage wire into the yellow wires on harness that are close to the tach?

4. The extra blue wire is supposedly for light right? Can I just attach this to the light switch?

Thanks for your help! I hopefully dont want to trailer the boat to the dealer just for him to point out the situation in a minute or two. Help!!

Searun1

Rodbolt,

The mechanic at the dealer told me it was a no brainer. I have everything all in now except I cant find the plug in the engine? Any idea where that last trim/tilt male plug would be?

Searun1

Re: Tach harness help needed!!!

There are two harnesses coming from the midsection into the engine housing. One is to operate the trim motor and one is for the trim indicator.

Re: Tach harness help needed!!!

I am having trouble with the engine end of the harness.

I have two plug-ins on the harness that need mates. One plug-in is a male, the other a female. The male harness wires are green/red, white/red, blue/white, and green. The female harness wires are black, pink, orange, and grey. This is a harness that came right out of the box for a Yamaha tach.

On the engine I have found only one female plug-in. Its wire colors are grey, pink, green, and red/green. Thats it for available plug-ins and while there are a lot of wires I dont see any available plug-ins.

The mechanic at my dealer just left yesterday and they are hiring a replacement. I would like to use the boat as we are in the thick of salmon season, but of course do not want to damage anything. Thats why I really can't go to dealer for awhile (not to mention the 1-2 week schedule...) It seems like it should be as easy as the mechanic told me (ie. plug and go) but...

Searun1

Re: Tach harness help needed!!!

ok
on the 205 motors the twin plugins are now incorperated as one. there is a tech bulliten on the tach changes for 2004 to 2005. on the engine end of the harness only one will be used fot the alarm/trim wires. if you have an older than 2005 tach there is a harness adaptor that will be needed. the new digital tachs require the dip switches to be set correctly or the tach will not function properly. how old is your tach and does it have two pink leads that are connected together and a tag explaing what to do if its a smaller 4stroke?
good luck and keep posting

Re: Tach harness help needed!!!

The tach is a 2004 tach according to the guy I bought it from. The dealer mechanic had me put the dip switches on up, up, down for a 90 HP 2 stroke.

So I need another harness... Do you have the part number for the harness by any chance?

Also can you assist me on the other questions? I have the yellow twin wires up closer to the tach. That is switch power right? So I can plug that back into my fuel gauge power for switch on right?

And can I put the blue wire (right next to yellow twin wire) onto the light toggle switch?

Thanks for the help.

searun1

Re: Tach harness help needed!!!

the yellow wire is key on 12 volts. the digital fuel gauge if used should be white. the blue wire near the yellow wire can be used for lights.
good luck and keep posting
