Tach hookup

Hi, I have a 1983 merc 50hp 4 cyl and I am wondering what wire I need to splice into to feed my tachometer. The control box doesnt have the connector like the older ones do, so if you can tell me what wire I need to hook up to I would appreciate it

It will be a gray wire that comes from one of the stator's yellow wires via the rectifier.

The changeover in wire colors took place about the time your motor was made. Look at the rectifer and see what color wire it has (not the yellow or red ones). It will either be brown or grey, likely grey. That is the tach signal wire and will be in the boat harness.
