I need to install a tach on my boat with a 2002 90 Yamaha. If I buy a tach will it come with everything I need (including instructions) to install it or is there special wires/harnesses needed? Any suggestions or recommendations? Thanks.

You will very likely need the tach harness whether or not you buy it from Yamaha. Aftermarket tachs rarely come with the harness since the tachs are fairly universal. The harness will have a plug on one end that mates with the engine harness at the control box and it is Yamaha specific.

Thanks. I just ordered the Yamaha multi-function guage rigging kit that comes with the harness. Is it self-explanatory how to install it?

what control box do you have?
and yes if the kit comes from yamaha its all plug and play. but you will need the trim harness and the poer lead harness as well as the tach, I dont have my rigging guide at home so I cant tell part numbers.
but the tach will have all the instructions on how to set the DIP switches, your motor is a 12 pole alt and should be a 2 wire trim sender, look at your sender to verify it.
any question when you get the kit post before applying power,

Re: tach install 2002 90 Yamaha

I received the tach kit. My control box is a 704. The only leads I can find coming from the control box are three leads, two male (green and red) and one female (black). These correspond to the three wires on one end of the tach harness. Are these the right wires? If so, since the red wire on the control side is constant and the yellow on the harness is switch power, do I need to wire the yellow into the switch? On the tach end of the harness are female green, yellow, blue, and black. These all correspond to the leads coming out of the tach. This leaves a male black on the harness with no corresponding connection. Where does this go? Also, where do the double yellow and blue that are about a foot up the harness connect? Do these connect to the nav lights, yellow being power, blue being... ?

On the trim harness, they seemed pretty self-explanatory. The one with the green/red stripe and green/white stripe. The harness side has the two green wire plus two others (one is white/red and the other is blue/white) but the plug on the engine side only has the two green. Is this right? The other plug on the harness side has grey, black/white, pink, and orange. The plug on the engine side does not have the orange. Is this right?

I figured it out. Instead of plugging to the red wire, I unhooked the yellow from the fuel gauge and hooked to that. Then I hooked the fuel gauge to the double yellow in the middle of the harness. Now everything works fine. One day when I am industrious maybe I'll hook up the blue wire so the backlighting will work, but it doesn't really matter that much right now.
