well long story short, got tracker pontoon boat, wiring was bad at best and horrible for the remainder. All the gauges were diconnected, and i was able to get the water psi hooked up, then the speedo (not sure how to draw up water for that one yet but it works on water psi), got the volt meter working....but the tach.....arghh.
anyhow I hooked up ground to the G battery to the I and got the light working.... but then i hooked up the S to the output of the rectifier.... no dice.... i finally tried hooking it up to the stator side of the rectifier and poof it worked and worked well.

just thought i would share.

The output of the rectifier is direct current. The output of the stator is alternating current which is what the tach needs to operate. A tach can't count pulses that aren't there.

The speedometer does not "draw up" water. The pitot at the back of the boat compresses air in the tube leading to the speedometer and that compressed air unwinds a Bourdon tube in the speedometer head which moves the needle.. Water does not actually flow through that tube although you might find a bit in the rear-most couple of feet of tubing.

yeah i stand corrected.... well i have the tubing for the speedo, and the speedo, i guess i will have to either purchase or fabricate a pitot .... if someone feels like posting a pic of one that would be great, in meantime i will start searching the net, i am thinking it would be a nylon or aluminum tube cut either with a fwd slash at end or with a hole perhaps pointed fwd like on an aircraft with a hole perhaps pointed fwd.
if this will work, and since pressure is independent of flow in this case does the pitot need to be of any particlar size? if not i am thinking 1/4 ID nylon or aluminum should work well

thank you very much for both the clarification and the correction
