Tach issues

For the first half of last season the Tach did not work at all, the needle would flicker with the start of the engine but nothing else. All of a sudden on a trip, the needle moved to a fixed position at around 4k and advances with throttle till it hits its limit at 6k (but appears to be functional through that 2k range.)

Is there some way to get it to go back to 0k? Is the tach faulty or is it an issue with the wiring? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I know little about the issue.

I have a 1989 Evinrude 175 hp outboard.

thanks in advance

Re: Tach issues

This could be as simple as a bad ground. If your tach is connected by a wire to the remote control box (below the key), try pulling the boot off and then replug. Then go to the back of the tach and clean all wiring connectors. There is also a dial indicator on the back of the tach. Rotate the indicator back and forth. Put it back to the position it was pointing to. Give it a try. The tach should reset itself to zero when you turn the key. If all this does not work, you may have a charging issue since this tach runs off of the alternator. Sounds like it is a bad ground though. Good luck

Re: Tach issues

The engine's rectifier/regulator sends the signal to the tach. Also recharges the battery. Have you been having any battery problems like not charging properly?

Re: Tach issues

The tach signal comes from the stator. The connection is made at the rectifier/regulator simply because the same leads feed it.
