Tach not working at all

Hi.. another dumb question for anyone who can help. My tach is not working. My motor is a Johnson GT200... 1989. when I first had it installed on my boat, it worked fine, and then about 3 months later or so, it stopped. I first thought it was a faulty tach that I bought, but I replaced the face (leaving the wiring in tact) only, but still no avail. I'm unfamiliar with the wiring that comes from the motor, so I dont know what to look for back at the motor's end to see if any wires came unhooked or loose. NOTE: the lights in the dial still light up though. on a separate dial, my "trim dial" doesn't register properly either. does that work off an electronic type sending unit, or is that most likely a mechanical piece that is broke? Simple questions from a simple mind, I know, but any information would be helpful to this novice boat mechanic.... thanks for any help.

probably a blown rectifier/regulator. I would test
that first.
good luck,
M.Y.

Ditto. If left unfixed and it is the reg/rec it could possibly cause the wires to catch on fire.

If it is a bad reg/rec have them vent the block when they replace it to avoid a future repeat.

Good luck!

woody,
from searching these forums, I gather that a rectifier converts AC voltage put out by the stator into DC voltage so the electrical system can utilize it. a regulator controls the amountt of DC current/voltage as not to excede certain voltage and amps. somebody please check my findings, I'm fairly new to this.
