tach problem

1998 6 cyl 150 oil inj. My gauge jumps around all over the place.Is this a gauge problem or a sending unit problem? How can I run a test? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a loose wire or ground that is loose... The tach gets its signal from the stator. Does the motor run okay??
