Tach problem

Tach works fine at idle and up to 1200-1500, but when I rev up to 2000-3000 (judging by sound) it sits at around 1200, moving just barely with more rpm's. Also, last time it started it worked fine, removed the carb and rebuilt it, and had the out drive and components checked out, and now it does this.

Re: Tach problem

1. Check/clean all your connections at tach and - side of coil
2. Turn the adjuster knob on the back of the tach back and forth a bunch times (sometimes this gets them to work right)
3. Replace it

Re: Tach problem

Cleaning and tightening all the connections made it work up to 2k, then stays there as it revs higher. Are you referring to the 4/6/8 cyl selector switch?

Yes. Turn it back and forth a bunch. Sometimes it will get you a little more life out of a tach that is on its last leg. Mine sticks at 3300 now.

Re: Tach problem

If you take the tach out and take it to a boat shop they should be able to test it for you. I took mine to a marine surplus store that sells all kinds of boiat stuff and they had a bench setup where they would test it. they just hook it up and turn the dial on the tester and it will simulate different RPMs. Then you can see if it is the tach or the wiring or something else.
