I on my boat I have what I am assuming is the original tach when the boat was new. I have had some problems the last 2 trips with it working, come to find out the negative power lead wasn't connected, but today after verifying everything tight secure and working when I launched the tach just dropped to zero. Everything else is working fine, motor is running great, accessories etc work. Can someone give me some options to check? It is a 70 hp evinrude and the tach has previosly worked, don't see any obvious cables loose so anything particular to check?

Sorry for the long post just lookin for some help

Thanks

Re: tach problem

There are several things in my experience. I restore and custom rig baots and electrical can be tricky. First: check the back of the tach. Many now have a setting for the number of cylenders the motor has, in your attempt to check things you mighe have messed with the setting (unlikely but you never know) make sure it matches the number your motor has. Second: not only check the wires at the tach but also where they lead to. Often times when working under or in a tight spot I have disconnected a wire from the ground block or the fuse box. Third: if all that checks out, pull off the engine cover and make sure the wire is still connected on hte engine. Double check you manuel to follow the right color wiring. Last: if all that seem to look ok then make sure the wires have not been crimpted anywhere between the motor and guage. It doesn't happen often but you never know. Also very rear but tach do go bad. Good luck

Re: tach problem

Lets also touch on the most common cause for a tach to stop registering. If you accidentally hook the battery up backwards, even for a second, you will fry the voltage rectifier, and it will not supply a signal to the tach, or charge the battery.

Thank you rocso I forgot that one but the poster did mention that it was running just the tach wasn't working. I just skipped that thought.

Re: tach problem

Thanks for the help I am assuming something has come loose, like I said I was on the lake and it was working, shut down to fish and when I took off again looked down the the tach needle had dropped to zero. I will pull the cover tonight and look under to make sure everything is still hooked up good and tight.

Greg
