Tach Question: Merc

Have a 98' Merc 25hp, 2-stroke with charging system (electric start) and Quicksilver Commander 2000 series side mount control box, with the little tach harness sticking out the back.

Question is: What tach do I need? I know I need one made for a outboard, but how many poles do I have? 6, 12, 20? Found some tachs on Greatlakesskipper.com for really cheap, would be nice not to have to buy one for like $90. They also have the harness from the tach to the control box for $20. When I do get one, what setting do I need to set the tach to? If I get the info, I will buy the gauge/harness and document the install and post it on here. I am also installing a water temp gauge and installing a sending unit on the head. Thanks for any help.

Re: Tach Question: Merc

The only oddball tach was one made for Chrysler outboards that had a 20 pole alternator. Not sure about your engine but I suspect it is a 12 pole (not 12 pulse). You set the tach for 6P (6 pulse). To clarify the numbers, a 12 pole alternator produces 6 pulses.

Re: Tach Question: Merc

Hey...thanks for the info. I was confused on that, sounds alot more simple getting one and setting it to 6 pulse. Just for reference....it HAS to be a outboard tach right? Heard you cannot use a automotive tach.
