It all depends on the design of the tach electronics. An 8 cylinder -4 stroke produces the 4 pulses/engine revolution. An outboard engine tach does not use ignition pulses but rather uses pulses from the stator and in the case of OMC and other modern outboards, that is a 6 pulse signal from a 12 pole stator. So IF the I/O tach will recognize the OB signal AND the tach has no OB setting, you don't have much choice but to set the calibration dial to 6 cylinder and then double the tach reading. The number of cylinders an outboard has is not relevant.
