I have a 2001 225 Vmax EFI that the tach quit on. I had the tach tested and it works. Yamaha tech changed the rectifier/regulator and stator, but the tach still doesn't work. The tach will zero when key is on, but I am not getting a signal from the CDI unit. The wiring checked out good, and I swapped a new CDI and still no tach.
Any ideas?
Thanks for any help
Steve

Re: Tach quit on 225 Vmax

Rodbolt, Thanks for the reply. I think I found out the problem. It all started when the engine would not start so I took it to the shop and the tech said it was the high-pressure fuel pump and replaced it. I then took the boat out and ran it and it did start, but the engine would bog down at wot and the tach was not working. I took it back in and they replaced the stator, rect/reg, and O2 sensor. None of this helped and they said it was probably the CDI. I was able to try a friend's and it still didn't help. So I took the manual and started tracing wires and noticed the main relay contact wires at the bullet connecters were wrong. The reds were connected to the red/yellows, this had the fuel pump and injectors hot even with the key off and the O2 sensor heater never got power. I then started the engine and had rpms reading on the tach, but the engine died and would not start again. I checked the main relay found I had good power and ground to the coil but the contract would not engage. I took it off and used a regular 12-volt relay I had and the engine started and ran fine. So I spent a lot of time and money to let a tech throw parts in the wrong direction, but I do have a good inventory of spare parts.
Also is there anything special about the main relay? $150.00 seems high for a 12 volt relay.
Thanks, Shamm
