So I got a tach for my 1986 force 85. 20 pole tach, I got it all wired up but it won't work. The needle jumps to zero when power is added, but when the motor is started up the needle doesn't move from zero. I got some other wire today and ran it from the tack back to the motor to see if that was the problem, and it wasn't. I also checked the settings on the back for the 20 pole position and that is right. Any Ideas? did I use the wrong type of wires on the back? I don't know what else it could be.

Re: Tach Troubleshooting

You could have a blown regualtor. Check to see if the motor is charging the battery.

Re: Tach Troubleshooting

Where exactly is the regulator? Where could I get one. I'll test that out by seeing if the volts go up when the motor is started right?

Re: Tach Troubleshooting

Connect the battery, then take the voltmeter and rev the engine check if the volt is going up. should start out neer 12.40V as u rev it it should go up to 12.79V, then u know that its charging
