Tach wire

Remodeled a Landau pontoon (powered by Suzuki) and removed the multi-function factory gauge. On the multi function, one of the inputs was an over-rev indicator. I want to replace this with a stand alone tach. It's a three-cylinder, DT 55 two-stroke. Will the wire that used to go to the over-rev be correct to hook up to the new tach? Additionally, do I need to order any special kind of tach for the three-cylinder?

Thanks!

Re: Tach wire

Tachometers for outboards are very generic. They are not number of cylinders dependent because they operate from the stator of the engine, not the ignition system. There is a switch on the back of the tach to select the number of pulses from the stator. Most (but not all of course) stators have 12 poles which produces 6 pulses. You therefore set the switch to 6P. You need to know the number of poles on the Suzy stator.

The wire that feeds the over-rev light will not be used since there isn't one on a generic tach, but the Suzuki accessories catalog has tachs with various indicator lights.
