tach working intermittent

I have an 81 Johnson 115 on my bass boat. Runs great, however, I had new gauges installed and the tach is like a part time employee. It works for a while then just drops to zero. Later it works again but never works always. I've seen and heard that it most likely the rectifier but also saw in a forum that it may be the stator. Can anyone help?

Mine was the rectifier. And it is the cheaper of the 2 so makes sense to try that first if your not going to have a mechanic diagnose it first.

Double-check all connections at the tach and the motor.
