I have a 1990 Ranger Comanche bass boat 363v series. the engine is a 1990 175 hp Johnson. I just replaced the starter battery yesterday hook all the wires back the way they were hook to the original battery, when I test drive her I notice the tachometer and speedometer was not working. What would cause this to stop working? Jerry

Re: Tachometer and Speedometer stop working?

Welcome to iboats.

Fuses, corrosion, rectifier....... could be dozens of things for the tach.

The speedometer is "normally" mechanical and is controlled by a pitoh ...... check to make sure the plastic line connected to the speedo is intact...... no breaks, cracks or clogs.

Thanks for your response. Yes the speedometer plastic unit is broke. I'm still looking for the cause of the tachometer not working also the trim button on the shift gear stop working, and the trim button on the engine not working either. this all started yesterday when I found out my starter battery was bad.

Yes....you have a bad connection somewhere.
even though things look tight.....thy might not be.....take off all the connections you made.....clean each one with emery cloth. and tighten...make sure they are tight....

the speedo is an entirely different problem....the two systems are not inter connected except for a little light bulb in the speedo.

Check for fuses on the motor.... You may have blown one.

I appreciate your response but I don't want to sound like" knuckle head" but where would I find the fuses on the outboard motor under the cover?

Buy a manual for your motor. That'll tell you everything you'll ever need to know. Best $30.00 you'll ever invest in your motor! Available here on iboats. My '81 Johnson 70 hp had in-line fuses in various places around the motor.

clean the battery terminals even if they look ok , if it was working before it should again.

Re: Tachometer and Speedometer stop working?

By chance did you touch the battery cables to the wrong terminals on the battery?

Even the slightest touch will render the rectifier useless.
The rectifier is usually where the tach gets its signal from.
More importantly, the rectifier is what supplies the current to keep your battery charged.

To test, start the engine, place voltmeter leads on the battery terminals, should read above 14.4 volts.
