I just purchase a 1988 Monark 18 foot pontoon with a 1988 60 hp evinrude and the tachometer and the speedometer doesn't work. Where do I start checking the wiring or connections? Where does the tachometer get its signal from? By the way it is a two stroke engine. It also idles fast. How do I adjust the idle. What brand of repair manual would you recommend? Thanks in advance for any help. Also where does the speedometer work from?

Re: Tachometer and speedometer

Welcome to iboats!

The signal for the Tach is a gray wire coning from the control box.

It is wired through the control box where it gets it's power, ground and pulse signal.

Speedometer's are usually connected to a pitoh tube which gets blocked...... you need to trace the tube and locate the pitoh...... they are very common to break.

Re: Tachometer and speedometer

My toon has a power switch on the dash. With the power switch off my tachometer reads 2000. When I turn the power switch to on the needle goes to 0. But the tachometer still doesn't read when I start the engine. Is there a test to see if the gray wire is putting out a signal? What kind of voltage will be there? Does the tachometer have a ground wire attached. I am not sure how to get the dash panel off to see on the backside of the tach. Why would the tach read 2000 with the power off? Okay just read a post about a three terminal connector in the control box under the key and I went and looked at my control box and by control box I am assuming we are talking about the where the forward and reverse lever is and the key is at. I have a connector there but it only has a purple wire in it. Looks like I need to fiqure out how to pull the dash panel and get to the tach to trace some wire. I assume since the steering is done by a cable if I remove all the screws on the panel the steering wheel and mechanism will come out with the panel.

Re: Tachometer and speedometer

Fiqured out how to get the tachometer out of the panel. My tach has a purple wire on the sending terminal instead of a gray one. Checked the gray wire on the terminal block. Only showed 1.9 volts. Not really sure if I checked it right. The seloc book I got for my engine is not very helpful. Probalbly going to order the Evinrude Service Manual. It is $75.00 but hopefully it will be a better manual for that price. Going to check posts again for the rectifier check. Used a laser tach to check the idle speed. Idleing at 1050 to 1100. According to the seloc book it is supposed to idle at 750. Couldn't find the idle screw to back it down. Will look some more this weekend. Just dawned on me that ont the back of the tachometer the switch didn't have any setting for poles. I have a 1988 Evinrude VRO 60. Does it need the tach with the pole switch on the back? If so where can I get one for my motor?
