Tachometer Question

I've got a new tachometer that I'm attempting to wire. It's a Telefex Red International 7000 rpm. I notice that the needle is resting on the 500 rpm mark. Shouldn't that be on zero? Is there something wrong with the guage?

Until power is applied, the needles rarely sit at zero. Once you turn the ignition ON, the needle should reset to ZERO.

Could anyone confirm for me that the black, purple, and gray wire group on the wire harness from my 2000 Johnson 90 horse is for the tach?
