tachometer sits at 5000

My tach sits up at 5000 rpm when the engine is at idle,I ve checked behind the tach for anything loose.

Does it move at all? Alot of tachs will not read zero when off. Maybe you don't have 12V to the tach. As soon as you turn on the key, the tach should read zero, engine running or not. It may be mis-wired or broken.
