Tachometer Stuck at 2000??

Hi all.

Instead of going to zero when I shut my boat down, my Tach sits at 2000 RPM. ?? I am perplexed on why this is? When I start the boat and throttle up the engine it reads everything above 2000 okay. But it never drops below. Shouldn't it go all the way back down to start position. Very confused and any help would be appreciated. I have a 1970's Mercury 1150...Thanks

Re: Tachometer Stuck at 2000??

Hi Dominic

Sounds pretty normal, assuming my Tach is normal. Mercury uses a mechanical damper on the needle to keep it from bouncing all over the place. The electronics will push-up or pull-down the needle. If power is removed it will remain in its last position. There may be a little bounce as power is removed.

It weird'd me out for a while as I kept expecting the tach to go to zero when I switched off the engine.

Does the pointer go to zero if the key is in the run position, but the engine isn't running?

I'm not aware of a method to calibrate these units. My unit is sealed, I have opened to clean it but don't recall a zero'n screw.

Best

David O'Rourke

David,

Thanks for your reply. It used to always go to zero but just stopped for some reason. Really wierd. My buddy has a tach that is doing the same thing as well. I am just hoping it is reading accurately. Good boating to you.

Take care.
