I recently bought a 1998 Bayliner Capri 1804 with a 1998 Force 120hp outboard.
This past weekend, I noticed several times that the Tachometer was working backwards. Instead of going clock-wise, it would run counter clock-wise. When I 1st noticed this, I immediately put it in neutral and then reverse and the tach then started working correctly. This happened again several times during the day. It did not seem to effect the operation of the engine.
Earlier in the day, I had removed the cover to the engine to replace the inline fuel filter. I was careful when removing and replacing it not to affect any wires or anything else. Also that day, while I cleaning the inside of the boat, I realized there is a wiring harness behind throttle control that may have been effected by the ?stuff? that had been stored in that area.
My question is what is the most likely cause of this problem? It seems to me to be a loose or shorted wire somewhere.
Is the throttle control connected to the tach in any way?
Thanks in advance.
