Tachometer

My tachometer on 86 XP150 when the engine is idleing will read anywhere from 600rpm all the way to the max number on the tach. Is my tach going bad or is it something on the engine because it reads rpm's thru electricity?

may be the voltage rectifier regulator<br />if you can get one easily just try another tach
