this boat is a 1975 trihull 14 footer so everything is getting old on this boat i was doing some work on my boat and i noticed when i was wiping everything down i ran my hand across the tach and the needle moved so i did it again to make sure i wasnt seeing things. and it pegged out at 5000 and stayed there. it took about a half hour fo it to come back to 0. so is my tach bad i do alot of grinding. i put a new flor in and stringer. so im wondering if the dust got to it.

Re: tachometer

Chances are the lens is plastic. Wiping across it creates static electricity. That can make the tach (or any other meter) do the same thing. The tach is more than likely ok. If you ever get into a development lab where work is being done on static sensitive components you will be required to where anti-static straps on your shoes, ESE wrist straps if you actually handle anything, and you will be watched very closely to make sure you don't destroy a rack or cart full of sensitive electronics.
