Hi,I'm new here and new to boating. I have a 1987 Bayliner Capri with a aq131 Volvo engine and 275a volvo drive.
My question is that the tach is not working. Any ideas what is wrong?
Thanks
Dave

Re: Tachometer

If the wire from the coil to the tach is hooked up and ok, and you have power and ground to the tach, then you probably have a bad tach.

Re: Tachometer

Don, there are only two wires on the coil. one is a white wire on the minus side and the other is a violet or purple on the plus side and I believe it goes to the Dist.

Re: Tachometer

You should have 3 terminals on the tach (not counting the light)
+ should be purple
S should be gray (if faded, it may look white)
- should be black

If they are not like that, then it won't work.

What model 131 do you have A,B,C, or D? Have things been rewired by someone that didn't know what they were doing?

I have the A model. Last thread said only two wires on the coil.

Re: Tachometer

The problem here is Bayliner made their own wiring harnesses and used their instruments in their boats.
On engines with carbed engines, a typical tach has 3 connections.
From the - terminal of the coil to the sender terminal of the tach. there was also a wire from the I terminal of the Ignition switch that provided power to the instruments. It was hooked to the + or B+ terminal of the tach, ground wires went to the - terminal on the tach.

Using the standard wire color codes, Purple is from the Ignition switch, black is ground, and gray is the sender for the tach.

You would have to contact Bayliner for a wiring diagram of the boat. I would show the helm wiring.

Re: Tachometer

There has to be a wire going from the - terminal of the coil, to the distributor. If there isn't, then the engine won't run.
Assuming the engine runs and how you know the tach isn't working, then I would assume you have a missing wire from the coil - to the tach S terminals, and it should be gray.
Did you read reply #8 ?

Re: Tachometer

Hi Don, everything checked out! There are 3 wires on the tach,+ is purple S is gray and- is black. Two wires on the coil - is gray and it goes to the tach + is purple and it goes to the Dist. The Engine does run but tach does not work. Talked to Jason at Faria he gave me acouple of things to check, still no work. He agreeed that it is the tach. They have on clearance for $49.00 good deal!! Thanks Don for all of your help!
