Taking Motor Apart

Last week I started pulling my motor apart. No compression on the center cylinder. I have a 1989 70hp Johnson. I got all the wiring, carbs, starter and accessories pulled off. I took off the lower cover to access the 6 bolts that go into the lower part of the block. What else holds it in place. I can not get the motor to budge and I am lost. How does the gears connect to the crank? etc....

If you have removed the six bolts on the bottom of the block, the only other thing attached to the block is the driveshaft (unless there is a seventh bolt that I'm unaware of). The block is sitting on a gasket that may be stuck very well. The driveshaft splines may be rusted into the lower crank, if so, you will need to remove the lower unit and get the driveshaft loose from the bottom.

It's better to remove the gearcase first anyway; it saves putting stress on the crank if the powerhead is tilted on removal.

Be sure to disconnect the shift rod.

look right in the center of the back of the motor, where it joins the exhaust, i have found an extra bolt there.

Re: Taking Motor Apart

A friend of mine just found a 65hp Johnson probaly around an early to mid 90's model. The owner says the top half runs really good, what happened to it was it stopped going forward or reverse. Said it has some kind of special gears in it and that they are pretty expesive. Anyway he said he would sell it to me for $175.00. Will that motor work/fit with my housing and gears and foot?

Johnson 65HP motors run from 1968 up with a lot of variables, so it's important to get the model number. If the gearcase will not shift, special gears won't make any difference.

I read that it might be easier to pull the lower/foot unit before tring to pull the motor. What is involved in pulling the foot? I have all 6 bolts out of the lower part of the motor but it still doesnt move. Maybe seized on the gear shaft.

Listen to what Tash said. There's one on the back side. Could be a nut or a bolt. It's probably a stud going up into the block with a nut on it. Sometimes hard to see.

Yes it is a nut on a stud around this year.

The engine simply slips on a splined shaft going to the gearbox.
