I just keep having good luck with this boat! I tried to take it out the other day and got the noise described here: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=414873

Then it starting just a "winding noise". So, I took the starter off and found that I had ground down a bunch of teeth on the flywheel. So now I'm taking the motor out to at least replace the flywheel and, hopefully, what caused it.

I don't know if it was hydro-lock, mis-aligned starter, bent shaft or what. Do you guys have any ideas? How about some tips on what to do/not to do to take the motor out? Thanks!

You don't have to replace the whole flywheel, the ring gear is replaceable (have a automotive machine shop do it)

Starter may need to be shimmed, timing too far advanced, or water intrusion in cylinders

Robby when you have ring gear damage the culprit is almost always the starter. Typically what happens is the bendix will stop functioning properlly. This will cause the teeth on the ring gear to get banged up. Then someone puts in a new starter and things are ok for a while. But then the grinding beast comes back. And each time it does it does a little more damage.
Did the starter shop do an amp draw test on the starter? I have seen alot of starters behave properly on the bench. A good amp draw test is a must.
I would replace the starter and ring gear both. And then clean all connections to the starter checking that all connections are tight and clean.Hope this helps.Good luck.:)
