According to my OMC manual, when taking off the carburetor I need to remove the fuel pump, intake manifold, and the leaf plate assembley. Is this correct? I've read on here that carb jobs are pretty easy to do yourself but my manual makes it sound difficult. I have a 1968 85hp evinrude speedifour. Model #85853a. Is this going to be a difficult job or am I just overstressing??

There's a lot that should be left unsaid in those manuals. To one who is not accustomed to working on the engines, one would think that they had to remove a crankshaft to change a spark plug.

Just remove the carburetor assemblies and rework them as needed.

Thanks Joe! I figured that would be the case, but I didn't want to try and tackle a job I wasn't sure about.

Thanks again

Woohoo!! A cotter pin and 3 screws later and she's off! I can't believe I'm actually doing this stuff myself. It's too easy!!

I've got a 1977 115 and I just rebuilt the fuel pump but now I can't get it running good. It starts and revs but put it in gear and it dies. I'm thinking the carbs are dirty. Is it easy to clean out the jets?
