Hiya folks. So I thought I had everything squared away on my 92 Bayliner Capri Sport w/ 5.0 mercruiser and took her out last weekend and she operated awesomely. Got to the island we were going to a look under the sun deck just to make sure everything is good and there is a good bit of water in the bilge. I just hooked her up to the hose in my yard to better see if I can figure out what is going on because I was pretty sure it wasn't the plug. As best as I can tell it seems to be coming from the water pump. Just wanted to get an opinion as to would those in the know think it is the pump itself that needs replaced or would it more likely just be a seal. Thanks in advance...

If you haven't replaced or inspected the shift and u joint bellows, start there. Shift bellow has been my leak on two boats thus far.

I take it you have an Alpha and not a Bravo drive and the water pump your talking about is the circulating water pump, correct? If this is the case and it's coming from the weep hole, just need to replace it.

If you have a Bravo drive and the water is coming from the seawater pump on the starboard side of the engine. Need to pull the pump off and have a look see. If it appears the water is coming out the shaft behind the pulley, need to either replace the pump or rebuild it. Rebuilding isn't hard, just need a press for best results

I replaced U joint, gimbal bearing, bellows, engine aligned etc. at the end of last season. I am not referring to the impeller or anything in the drive but on the engine block itself below the thermostat housing which I replaced last year due to overheating and that fixed that issue. When I start the boat water trickles down a fair amount and as best I can tell is coming from below the thermostat housing and above the shaft pulley at what I refer to as the water pump but if there is another name for it I am not sure what it is. I am hoping it is just a gasket, and I am sure one way or another I will need to take it all apart, but I was just wondering do these "pumps" often crack or is it usually only a gasket?

Since it's above the circulating water pump I'm guessing the thermostat housing didn't seal

No, it is actually below the circulating pump. I have the one that has the brass impeller. The thermo housing seems to be fine.

There is a weep hole on the pump just below of where the shaft goes into the house. If that is where it is coming from then the seal is bad and pump needs to be replaced.

Below the thermostat housing and above crank shaft pulley (sounds like circulating pump area).
Below circulating pump (only thing below circulating pump is the crank shaft)
You have a brass impeller (I think your talking about the circulating pump impeller)

Other then hoses on the circulating pump there are 3 gaskets. Two gaskets which mount the pump housing to the block, and one gasket between the housing and the pump. All of these gaskets are paper type

Thanks for all of your input. I took the pump off and that was the problem. There is a stainless steel back plate that has a small rust hole near one of the bolts holding the plate on. I hope to be able to just replace the plat and if not I guess I will have to replace the entire pump.
