New to this forum and boating but no dummy. After main battery wiring failed due to poor end installation, boat stalled. 15 minutes found issue but battery too week to restart. Sent son ashore to retrieve another battery. We were in shallow water, shallow enough waves were causing my outdrive to bang the sand. I decided to re-engage wire to raise the drive but to my horror my boat had filled with a lot of water. It was touching the oil pan and bleeding over the fuel tank. Once I hooked up the wire, the pump came on, i lifted the drive and the water drained. Funny thing is I did not see the pump cone on again nor did it need to. Bellow boot looks good. Why was it leaking when down and engine off. Did banging against the sand have something to do with causing a leak?

first, welcome aboard

second, Volvo Penta has been building drives for decades. would help if we knew what vintage drive and boat

third, most likely you have an older boat with a rotten transom and banging into the sand simply squashed the rotten wood in the transom. or your boat is well past the point of needing bellows. either way, you need to pull the drive and start investigating.
