taking out gimbel bearing

hi guys heres what im working on i have a 78 bayliner quartermaster with the aq120b/270 and i am puting it back to geather after a rebuild and i want to replace the gimbel bearings before i put it in the boat i have seen Don S's post on the process but the profesonal tools listed for the job i dont have and have never heard of is there a way to replace them without the specal tools the boat shops around here have only an idea about how to pull it apart they say we dont know how to do boats before the 90's all four of the boat shops said about the same so if you guys could chime in i would be very gratefull

You don't have gimbal bearings, I assume you are talking about the bearing in the flywheel cover, aka PDS (primary drive shaft) bearing.
It doesn't take any real special tools since the engine is out. Couple of properly sized snap ring pliers , and something to press (Mallet) the outer race of the PDS bearing back into the flywheel cover with (piece of properly sized pipe), and you should be good to go.

Further to what Don said...sometimes it's hard to find the right size snap ring pliers so on the advice of a BOC member I got a long set of needle nose pliers and carefully ground down the tips to round points....it worked great.
