Guys here is my dilema. New engine 5.7 vortec carb, block 880 casting with less than 10 hours was taken out of boat due to leaking oil pan gasket by the timing chain cover. Engine has a noise under load that comes and goes, not yet determined where. Long story short. Rust signs where detected of leaking from the head gasket outside of engine. Now my question is "would" an internal leak cause the noise being produced under load. So far no water in oil. Engine has been barely broken in. Outdrive was removed to discard bearing or u joints and still present. Does not sound like lifter or rocker arm tick. I know diagnosing over the web is not viable and i dont have a vid of that so i would have posted it. But any info regarding test that could lead me down a certain path would be appreciated.

Did you use new manifolds ? What took out the old motor?

Yes, new manifolds and risers installed. The boat was purchased with a locked 5.0 and swapped over to a 350. This engine was has a tempestous story. This is the 2nd time out of the boat. This time is because the oil leak but noticed the corrosion on the outside of the new head and was looking for possible answers as to the noise under load possible link to water intrusion. At least still undetermined if interior head gasket is compromissed.

Pull your plugs. If one is really clean or has water on it, you have an issue and should pull the motor

Probably either a lean rattle, or hydro locking from water

Here are 2 vids of the two noises that i came about. The 1st one just recently developed as i was testing it sounds like small tick. The pulley noise is because of being wet that later went away.
The later one is when load is applied. Scratching my head.

I’d take the belt off it and see if it stops the noise. Only run it for a short while obviously

Sounds like timing is off and you are over advanced. Or you are running really lean

Why isn't the place you got the engine from taking ownership of the problems, identifying the problems and fixing them?

A small tick can be a spark jumping from a Plug Wire that isn't in clear sight.
Any engine roughness in the 2nd Video?

On the second vid towards the end you can hear a rattle come into play. Will try and record a better one.

Might be worth pressure testing cooling system. Recall seeing where head gasket weeping into combustion chamber would make a tick as engine speed increased. especially thinking this if you are seeing head gasket externally leak…
who do the reman on it or was it a new engine

Reman. On another note i placed my hand on the dizzy as i was trying to turn it and with all wires on and tight it gave me a hell of buzz.

either a wire boot going south or bad wire

first off , i would not trust a V8 motor swinging from exhaust bolts .

the sound could very well be a weight spring for the mechanical timing advance in the dizzy come adrift. or ,? is that just the belt squeak you mention .
if its the knocking noise , my guess is the drive adaptor dampeners were not correctly insstalled.

retorque the heads , check the small head bolts they have been known to pull threads or not bottom out correctly if they were not chased before installation (don't ask how i know this :ROFLMAO:) and the gasket seeps along the join.

Update, plug wire cracked at boot in dizzy. Wires and dizzy replaced. Now off to the clacking rockers.
