I'm full of questions today.

Subject: Volvo Penta 270 outdrive propeller. I'm trying to get it off to see size/pitch so I can buy another and also take this one in for repair. I've established that it's the newer type 270 without the metal tabs. I took out the allen head screw and am having trouble getting the cone off.

Is it suppose to turn counter clockwise? It's not moving and I don't want to break anything before I use more torque. I'm going to spray WD40 to see if it loosens. I just hope that once I get the cone off that the prop isn't frozen to the shaft.

It is a right hand thread. You may find it very dry on the thread and needs 'encouragement'.
Use a small high tensile bar that fits neatly into the hole and strike it with a soft face dead blow hammer.
Use a leather glove on your hand to hold the prop and just quietly work on the nut striking the end of the bar.
It took me about 1/2 hr to release mine this way. By all means soak it overnight with a penetrating fluid to help soften the white powder on the thread.
Good luck.
Pete

Re: Taking the Propeller cone off.

Thanks for the info Pete. Let me see if I understand you. A right hand threaded item would be removed by turning it left when taking it off (counterclockwise). The hole you are talking about is the hole that goes through the cone. The nut you are talking about is the cone itself. Are these correct.

Pardon me for my ignorance but all I see is the allen bolt, which I have already removed and the cone, which has holes on the side. I just want to make sure I'm doing this right because my best mechnical ability seems to be stripping or breaking screws and bolts and "the get a bigger hammer" syndrome.

If you have the allen bolt removed, stick a big phillips screwdriver through the holes of the cone and turn it counter clockwise. Stick a 2X4 between the prop and the cavitation plate and use force till it comes loose. Heat is always an option in marine applications.

Don's method will work as well. Yes the nut / cone needs to be screwed anticlockwise to remove it.
Sometimes you may succeed by tightening first before undoing the nut.

Hey harrisg! Are you taking your prop off in the water? If you are be carful. There are a couple peices that should come off.On mine there is a part that fits to that cone your having trouble with.I almost lost mine in the drink the first time. You should also have a plastic spacer. Its very thin and easy to drop.

Trebor 0301, thank goodness this time I have a boat on a trailer. I liked having previous boats in a slip but that created other problems. However, just because this one's on land doesn't mean I won't lose something anyway. Now where did I put that cone? lol
