1988 150 blk max
The water out of the tell-tale is very hot. What temp range should the temp be? I am going to run it into a mug and take the temp.
Thanks, Dead Eye

Re: Tall-tale Temp

I have found that the temperature varies on my 50hp. If I have been running at close to WOT and stop at the ramp or to anchor, the water stream is almost too hot to touch, but drops rapidly if I idle for a minute or two. As the vanes open on the impeller, more water is taken in and it cools down quickly.
I don't know the numbers, but you should always be able to touch the stream and there should be no steam unless you are operating the boat in a very cold environment. I can hold my hand under the telltale while the boat is being driven at 5000 rpm and it's just hot, but still comfortable to touch.

140* water is extremely uncomfortable to the touch and probably can cause damage to you. Your t-stats may be 140's. It may not be quite as hot as you think - touch can be subjective - depending on the individual. Check with thermometer to be sure.

:)

"touch can be subjective "

True JK..

We wrestle crocs over here mate... ;)

Seriously.. though.. If it's too hot too touch it's not "Cooling" the motor. Use one of those wax sticks to test on the head temp while running.

Re: Tall-tale Temp

All I can tell you is, that if you're running the engine on the muffs at idle speed. You should be able to put your hand under the stream/spurts as long as you want.... Now, if you rev it up somewhat and the t-stats open, that is a different story... From your previous posts, it sounds like you're not getting proper water flow out of the tell-tale...
Have you checked the poppet yet, and are you 100% sure that the water pump and t-stats are working properly?

Dead Eye, the stats should open at about 143 degrees. The water temps may rise, depending on the load on the motor, the condition of your water pump, and watertightness of the motor. Poppets sticking open will hamper cooling also, and in my mind would be the cause of sputtering steam coming out the telltale. I'm not sure what I think would happen from poppets sticking shut...

-dd-
