Hey all wondering if I could get a little insight-

I have a 96 28hp evinrude. Changed the lower unit oil early April and have taken it out 4 times this spring. When I got off the lake today I noticed excess amount of brown/tan oil coming out of lower weep hole. Drained lower unit oil and it was fine. Bad seal under water pump? Any ideas help. Thanks

Yes I have been idling and slow trolling around 3mph for long periods of time. Everything runs normal and smooth for an older 2 stroke. I've used the motor for 4 years with many hours on it each summer but have never had that much discharge if any. While running it slowly consistently comes out of that lower weep hole.

Usually oil coming out of drain holes around the lower unit of 2 stroke engine is unburnt oil from the fuel

But the oil in your picture does look more like gear oil
Does it smell like gear oil ?

If oil is leaking from the gear-case water will probably get in. Is the oil in the gear-case still "clear and bright" in appearance or has it become cloudy or milky looking. This would be a sign of water entering and that a seal is leaking.,most likely the drive shaft seals, but it could be the shift rod seal.

Id keep an eye on the condition of the gear case oil, a close eye if you are operating in sea water.
If the oil stays clear and bright you have no problem
If the oil becomes turbid or if the oil leaking is viscous and smells like gear-case oil I'd suspect the seals.

That’s a lot of oil for a motor that has just been run.

Is you lower pan clean?
Any oil leaks?
Any puddling in the carbs? Could have a float hanging up a bit.

No oil leaks. I live in a cold climate and it spends winters in garage. I drained lower unit oil which is green and it's completely fine. Much different color than the tan/brown coming from lower weep hole.
