Tandem Trailer Shaking

Hi All,

I have a 17ft Fibreglass Boat on a tandem trailer. At the weekend I noticed at certain speeds (80-90kph and also at approx 105kph) the sides of the trailer seem to rapidly shake up and down by approx 7cm. The shaking seems to be centered just in from of the wheels at the point where the trailer starts to angle inwards. I am concerned that the trailer or boat may become damaged. (although the boat does no move at all with the shaking).

Could it be that the wheels need balanced (I can only see the from pair from my driving position) as they almost seem to bounce on the road with the shaking? Or tyre pressures? Any advice would be welcomed.

Thanks
Donald

Sounds like axle tramp caused by incorrect tire pressures. That would be my 1st check.

The tire pressure will be stamped on the sidewalls.

Check tire pressure first. While you are checking things, jack up the trailer and try to shake the wheels up and down/side to side and make sure they spin smoothly. Could be loose/bad wheel bearings. Probably not, but they should be checked every so often. If you have not done so in last couple of years, it would not hurt to pull the hubs and check and repack your bearings. Also check the condition of your tires. Look for knots or buldges. If everything checks out ok, you can have them balanced. Good luck, hope you get it fixed.

Have tires balanced and check each tire for tread separation causing lumps/bumps on the treads or sidewalls. How old are the tires?
