Tappet noise on Mercruiser IL6

I did a non-running adjustment on all rocker arms and I still get this nasty noise ... I believe it comes from the forward-most set of rocker arms.
This is a distinct, sharp noise... not a dull, thunking sound and it comes from the top/front of the engine (not down deep in the engine). I feel certain it is one of the two front pushrods but do not want to tighten too far????????
My big concern is over-tightening. If I over-tighten 1/2 a turn will that cause real damage?
Also, how can I determine which pushrod is noisey? It is not possible with the engine running?
Thanks,
skiph

Re: Tappet noise on Mercruiser IL6

I have to ask you if you can help me.....
I also have a IL6 mercruiser 165. What year is yours? I am having difficulty setting the timing on my engine because the timing tab is so corrodid. Would it be possibe for you to take a pic of your timing tab? I would really appreciate it!

I also had a difficult time adjusting my valves. I adjusted them running: I loosened them until the started making a clacking noise, then slowly tightened until it was quiet. Then tightened an additional 3/4 of a turn in 1/4 turn increments.
