Tear Down From Marine Shop Questions

Hi all, every bit of advice I can get at this point might give me some hope or best way to proceed.Last year I took the boat out with family for a ride and it shut down WOT...well we took it to a spot with kicker and cleaned out plugs(thought they were fouled because boat would not start) After beaching it for awhile after some swimming it started up right away and thought no more problem.I then had it winterized and stored inside at marina for winter.I didnt start running motor(on muffs in driveway) until trying to sell it just recently(last month is when this saga started)First I noticed the water was sporadic coming out of the pee hole when we had it on muffs in the driveway.I then had shop change out the impeller and had water pump checked.I was selling boat so we(buyer and I)had it on muffs and everything seemed fine.Long story short he bought the boat for $10130.He then reported to me when he took it out in the water a bad knocking sound was heard(that we could not hear while on muffs).I returned his money and he returned the boat.He says he got the preliminary diagnosis(bad rod bearing with probably needing crank replacement) from his shop up in Toronto(where he had it checked out but they did not tear it down).I am thinking I have to now take it to the marine shop by my home.Does anyone know how long approximately (in labor hours)it takes to tear it down? How expensive is just the tear down?Any way to get the hours that have been run on my motor(i.e.computer mod or anything similar)other than my best estimate?

Re: Tear Down From Marine Shop Questions

There is soooo much that you haven't told us.

First, what motor?
When it shut down on you, did you have any alarm go off? Did the motor still crank over at normal cranking speed, or did you have to wait for it to cool off?

Has the temp alarm been tested?

How much fuel was left in it over the winter and this summer?

Did the new owner drain the fuel and start with fresh fuel or attempt to run a high performance 2 stroke on old stale fuel and detonate it, causing knocking and destroy rod/bearings/pistons?

This could be a real can of worms that you can be stuck with.

There is a lot of things that could have contributed to this engine failure and you have only barely told us anything.

Need far more info.

I think I recall another post on this subject. I belive the general advise was not to take the boat back. Yet I do forget the motor type etc. One reason why thread starters should continue a thread, not start new ones, for ongoing
subjects. Just makes it to hard for continuity of a problem.

Sorry for confusion on thread topic.I am a newbie,so I am learning and won't start another thread on this matter,I'll just continue posting on this one from here on out.Your advice to me was not to take boat back as I recall but being a man of my word(to buyer)I did because I was honest with him about loss of power last year. There was no audible alarm at the time of loss of power. We were not aware of any overheating problem at the time,we just thought the plugs were fouled out,so we cleaned them. All gas had been drained from previous year and winterized and inside storage at marina where I originally bought the boat which is a Starcraft 196 Fishmaster with 125 Hp ELPTO Saltwater series Mercury 2001.I have had some health issues this year so it wasn't until the last month I put fresh gas in it and put it up for sale.Earlier today I talked with the marine tech who now has it but hasn't had a chance to fully check it out yet.He did say his son was able to put it in the water and listen to the motor and his description of the sound was more like a ticking sound(more encouraging than what the guy who bought it then returned it said). He said they should be able to get to it tommorrow and he said its still too early in this stage to tear it down(whew).I will keep everyone informed who has been following this saga with follow up posts. Thanks again your advice is truly appreciated.
