Ted William Motor Information/Lower Unit Grease

I have a Ted Williams motor. I do not know the size or year. The model number is partially scratched off, but here is what I can read. 217-5XX8-1. The serial number is 3C-151128. If somebody can tell me the size and year from this, I would greatly appreciate it.

I went to change the lower unit oil and found that it has a "fill" screw and a "vent" screw. They are on opposite sides and it seems that the vent is lower than the fill. I did open them up and found that there was no oil, but grease in there. Can anybody tell me how to either put grease into there, how much, and what type? Or do I need to somehow clean it out and get some oil in there instead? What is the way to fill this thing with the fill and vent holes like they are?

Thanks for any help with this. As you can read, I am a novice and already confused.

Thanks for the post, I have just brought home a 217-58521-0, 3 hp motor and was looking at changing the gear oil also and noticed the same thing. There is a fill and vent screw but nothing lower than those to drain. I hope you get a reply soon cuz I want to do the same thing.

If it has a fill and vent screw, use standard outboard lower unit oil. It's available at pretty much any marine store and in most Walmarts. You can get it in a tube that screws into the drain hole. You take out both plugs, drain the existing oil, then screw the tube into the lower hole and squeeze the heavy oil out until it start running out of the top hole. Then, screw the fill screw back in, unscrew the tube with the oil, and screw the bottom screw in. You'll lose almost no oil. If there are gaskets with the screws, they should be replaced with new ones. They should be a standard size, available at any marine store.

If there's a chance that you have water in your oil, then I would charge it up with the Lubriplate 105 Lower Unit Lube. The white grease works good for these direct drive motors that often leak water in.

Re: Ted William Motor Information/Lower Unit Grease

Thanks for the help.

Since I currently have grease in the lower unit, do I need to clean that out before I put lower unit oil into it? Any special info on attempting that job? I have read on other posts that grease was sometimes used in the lower unit. Is the oil recommended over the grease? I would find a manual, but I don't know the size/year of this beauty either. Thanks again.
