I was just given a 7.5 HP ted williams 7.5 HP short shaft outboard.

The plan is to use this as a kicker motor on my 19.5' slickcraft.

I had this running in a tub of water today, but I have a few questions.

OK #1 this has an internal or external tank, is the little valve on the right side( opposite of the shifter) for turning on/or off the internal tank? and closed (up) position would be running off the internal tank.

#2 the fuel tank hookup is a single quick connect, what quick connect do I need to get to run an external tank?

#3 I assume this is an air cooled engine with a water cooled exhaust, am I correct here?

#4 is this motor sufficient to run my 19.5' boat from 1.0-3.3 MPH?

I have to rebuild the carb as it floods and drips from the bowl. Easy to do here?

I have a serial and model number of 217585880 and 6a055846 any info on what motor I have?

Hey, it was free, so you can use it as a kicker. It's not the choice I'd make, but you have it, so...

Your questions:

1. I'm not sure about the fuel valve positions. trace the hoses and experiment.

2. The connector is a Chrysler-type connector. Get one here on iboats or at any well-stocked local marine shop.

3. Right. Air-cooled engine and water-cooled exhaust. Impellers are available on ebay, at www.certifiedpartscorp.com, or on the www.searspartsdirect.com site. You'll need the Sears model number.

4. Yes. It should run it at those speeds or even a little more. It'll be a long trip back to the dock, though. A 9.9 or 15 hp kicker would be more practical as a backup engine. The Johnson and Evinrudes in those HPs are ideal.

A carburetor kit will deal with your carb leaks. Be sure it includes the red rubber fuel pump element and the flapper valve that looks like a gasket. If you're going to keep and use this outboard, get a service manual for it. the ebay sellers and certifiedpartscorp have them and they're not expensive. Get one before doing the carb work. There are a couple of critical issues involving the needle and seat, float setting, and positioning for the fuel pump element. If you don't do it right, it won't work.

That's a 1972 model, btw. Made by Eska for Sears. Tecumseh engine.

Here's an interesting bit of info: That model uses a solid state ignition system. If it fails, the parts are either not available or will cost more than the engine is worth. Keep that in mind before committing yourself to using this outboard in a critical application.

If the ignition fails, you're out of luck. You won't find the ignition module that goes under the flywheel available anywhere. Period.

It's the weakest point on these outboards. By far.

Saginaw Bay,

CA Transplant mentions some very good advice on the carburetor issues, it would be good to follow that advice considering a similar personal experience I had when getting a 7.5hp Gamefisher back to running condition.

If your engine has ignition issues, CDI Electronics rebuilds the ignition trigger units (the piece under the flywheel) for these solid state engines, for about $100 it's not a bad deal. You will have to remove your ignition trigger unit and send it to CDI, and they have about a 2 week turnaround on rebuilding them. You can also replace the original ignition coil with a standard run-of-the-mill OMC single cylinder ignition coil, and then you'll have a fully updated ignition system.

These are good engines, are very lightweight and typically more fuel efficient than comparably sized twin cylinder two-strokes from the other big engine manufacturers.

I'm addicted to the dependable Eska, Just Love them little loopers:p

critical application
When ever I go out on the water its a "critical application"

Ps. you can save a dime by gettin the merc 9.8 7/16 +.01 diameter impeller, here at Iboats and the Chrysler-type connector all in the same shot.$$$
