Got an easy one for you guys i hope
got well below freezing here last night and the co-owner of my boat took it out to duck hunt and the steering was frozen, it wasn't due to old grease, etc. because we've been hunting everyday and it works fine

needless to say he turned it to hard and it broke. what broke is my question, the cable or the helm, the steering wheel now turns freely and clicks but the engine does not move.

I know how to replace both but I don't want to rip out either one if ones not broken. Thanks in advance.
I have a NFB SAFET-II helm

well until you disconnect something you will not know. you can disconnect at the motor, and see if the cable moves. but i think basically you really need to remove the cable at the helm.

if it is as cold there as it is here, it would wait for another day.

The failure is in the helm, stripped worm or gear, whichever type you have or the casing has separated.
The real question is why. Disconnect the drag link and see if the motor will turn freely. If not the freezing is in the motor swivel. The cable could have frozen and if the steering is old that would be enough to cause the stripping of the drive.

Concure with JamesR, the cable is pretty stout and I would be really suprised if you hurt that.

Poke around on Ebay, you may get lucky.
