35 years of boating, probably 25+ winterizations but this year a steering cable issue.....hmmmm:facepalm:. winterized my '76 20' proline w/'92 evinrude 115, started right up with no prodding as if it ran yesterday, everything worked perfectly EXCEPT steering wheel won't budge:eek:. well greased, was fine in november;).
so, now what:facepalm:? never had to do a cable before. where do i start? can it be repaired/coaxed back to working or is it a definite 'need to replace'? any website with pics on where to start/what to do to remove:cool:?

Re: teleflex question

Over 20 years, I have had 2 cable siezures. Both were well greased. Sawed into the last one and found not amount of grease would have prevented. In a bend from exiting the motor splash well to the engine, the wire wound sheathing, looks like wire rope, had rusted. This is the winding gives the cable it body and it is located just un the the out vinyl covering. Inside of the wire winding is a plastic tube with the movable steering wire in it. When the winding rusted and expanded, it clamped the plastic tube to the steering wire, just like a vise.

The only choice is to replace. Not a big job, but you may have to move the engine to the side to get the business end of the cable into the motor tilt tube.

Re: teleflex question

The first thing I would do is to disconnect the steering cable at the motor to determine if it is the cable or the motor that is stuck. A little bit of heat from a torch might also be beneficial...just be careful.
