Quick question,
If you have the rack and cable(mine is one piece)off the boat, should you be able to move the cable in and out freely by grasping the pushrod and pulling and pushing?
The helm has been removed from the rack also.
It is not a NFB system, it is an older back mount rack system that is bound up.
It moves, but it's tight.

Thanks
Dave

There Should be Very Little Resistence........

Complete Helm + Cable systems are Very Cheap(under $200.)as far as Boat Parts go.......
Don't take the Chance with your Safety.....
If the cable is Degraded to the point it's Hung-up/Sticking, Replace the Whole Thing......

Re: Teleflex rack system

I have Teleflex rack steering cable system on my Thundercraft boat and my cable was getting extremely difficult to move. When I realized how much of a pain it was going to be to try to remove the whole thing,I tried something different.
Bought a can of Krown T40 rustproofing spray. Then I stripped away a little bit of the plastic cover over the steering cable right near the motor. Over a period of two days, I kept spraying this stuff in there then cleaned up the outside of the cable and used 3M electric tape to wrap the area of the cable that was exposed.
It remained waterproof and worked like a charm.

Re: Teleflex rack system

Thanks for the suggestion Lilthundr, but as they say, "been there done that".
Not only did I strip off some sheathing on the cable,(after all else failed), I put a hose over that end, down past where I stripped it,clamped it, filled the hose with some penetrating fluid, clamped a hose from my compressor on the other end(to try and put the penetrating fluid under pressure to attempt to force it through the hose),and left it with 25 psi overnight.
I had hoped to see a puddle of fluid at the rack end in the morning but......nothing.
Screw it.....I'm gettin a new one.
Thanks for the replies guys.

Dave

WOW seems yours was a lot worse than mine. If you have room to work to get the old one out,it is just as well that you buy a new one. I checked into the prices and they are about $170.00 Can.

But think of the strength you would get in your arms with the old steering cable lol
