teleflex rotory steering question

I'd like to know if it's possible to remove the cable from the jacket on a teleflex rotory steering system on the motor end. There's not enough room to remove the cable/jacket by pulling it out of the motor's tilt tube without removing the motor, Evinrude 115 @ 400 lbs. I don't have the equipment to remove the motor. If I could remove the cable by pulling it through the tube on the port side of the motor, I could remove the jacket on the starboard side. Any help would be appreciated.

Nope. The jacket and cable are an assembly. If you do not have the lifting equipment ..... you could (if you have room) unbolt the motor and slide it over a bit. You might have to park near a tree and secure the motor with a block and tackle ........ there are many ways to lift and move the motor.

yup agreed, I used to do it with a buddy to help stabalize the motor while I used a car jack under the skeg to lift it that one inch needed to get it off the transom (85HP evinrude). Not the easiest or safest i guess but it worked fine we had to do it a few times for different reasons.

I had the same problem. The cable had to do an "s" to get to the thru tube on the engine. The rise in the transom wouldn't allow the cable to bend.

I removed the mount bolts from the engine and slide it as far as necessary to the port side to remove the old cable and get the new cable started. Once started, started feeding the cable and pushing the back in place. The force was enough bend the cable when the engine aligned with the bolt holes.

With the motor pushed to the side is a good time to inspect the gel under the mount and polish and wax the area. Check the wood in the transom at the bolt holes to check for rot.

Cautions:
1) place a sheet of something like plastic or wood to prevent the engine mount from scratching the gel.
2) tilt the trailer tongue all the way down or within reason to better keep the weight of the engine over the transom.
3) use something to use as a secondary restraint for the engine, i.e. stout tree limb, A-frame.
4) loosen/disconnect the other control cables and wiring to prevent them from being damaged.

An option is use a cable that has supports mount to the transom. Still have to move the engine to get the old cable off the engine or saw it in sections as it is being withdrawn.

You can cut the old cable to get it out, but that does not solve the problem of installing the new cable.
