Teleflex Steering Cable Question

Thanks to the various posts on the subject I've just successfully pulled out my old (and shot) steering cable. The information on the cable is: "Teleflex 12'; SC7212 F2." It steers a 1982 Mariner 30 hp outboard.

Is there a Teleflex model # cross reference site? Or should I take the QC II verbage literally - that it will fit Teleflex systems old and new? I read somewhere on-line that, because my OB is an older Mariner, it requires a special shaft on the engine end of the cable to fit the tilt tube.

Most cable ends are standard. Are you sure that "special" Mariner end does not come off?

If it were me, I'd by a whole new system. It's not that much more for the new steering head also.

I didn't see any way it would come off - I'll take a closer look tomorrow.

It looks like a whole new system would be about $50-$60 more than the cable alone. Since the existing wheel/bezel/steering head seem to be in good condition, that would be in the category of a "nice to have." At this point in my project I'd rather spend the $50-$60 on the "got to have" stuff.

A 100% safe steering system is a "got to have". That is one area where you do not want to thrift.

Nope, nothing on the motor end of the cable comes apart.

I should have clairified - the old cable is "shot" in the sense that the outer skin is cracked and deteriorated with the metal reinforcement showing, as a result of weathering. The inner cable and steering mechanism work smoothly with no significant slop. There is no safety issue with using the existing steering wheel/head with a new cable.

Re: Teleflex Steering Cable Question

Well, I ended up getting the package that comprises the entire steering system (except for the wheel). Went down to West Marine to cash in a coupon they sent me and they only had the complete systems in the size I need. Cost me $171 after the deduction for the coupon.

The old gear box/bezel assembly came off reasonably easy. I did have to drill a hole in the bezel to clear the woodruff key - it was in there solid - couldn't budge it. I'll put the new system in tomorrow. Good instructions with the package. Looks pretty straight forward.
