Steering froze up on my boat with a Mercury outboard, I pulled the cable and rotory NFB steering box off together as one. I was ready to start looking for a new cable. Then I saw stamped on the steering box "do not disassemble-steering failure could result, replace complete assembly" ! Do I really have to replace the whole thing? It looks simple enough, can't I thread a new cable into the same box and go safely on my way?

no of course not. just get a cable. the "do not disassemble" was referring to the helm itself. when you buy a new system, it comes seperate.
