ok i searched here, searched the net, and understand how and the general location area to add a tell tale to an omc v4, but im still nervous as a chihuahua about drilling my 1977 85hp johnson javelin as i just got it running. does any one have any specs or any pictures as to where the tell tale goes for an older omc v4 that DOES NOT have the casting boss on the starboard side of the block? can i drill it right behind the coil bracket? or is that too far back? do i need to remove the coil bracket and drill and tap closer to the head?

Go right behind the coil bracket. If you're nervous, pop the head and take some measurements of the water jacket.

Thanks wombat, I looked at your pictures closely and it seems a good place to drill and tap the top of the water jacket is just behind the coil bracket, and lined up where the thread holes for the head bolts end. I might do it when I get off of work today and take pictures, for the thread on tell tales, I'm sure I'm not the only one that's hesitant to do it to their motor because their unsure of themselves and the location.

I put one in exactly the same place on a '77 85hp. What could possibly go wrong? Right on top is actually a better place anyway. It'll burp out ALL the air pockets if it's on the very top.

What could go wrong? Your talking to the guy that tried to shove a screwdriver thru his finger taking the fuel pump apart to rebuild it. I know I have the skills and the tools, but I've also go the worst luck of any one I know. I'm gonna give it a shot after work. Heres hoping for the best.
