Here are the motors I have used and the storeys behind them in my life.
1955 5 hp Viking (Eaton's brand Johnson) Top mount tank, ran great until it melted into a puddle of aluminum when the cabin shed burnt in 1995.
1958 Evinrude 10 hp, It would start by pulling through 1 compression stroke. But it would give you a spark plug shock through the tiller handle at 3/4 throttle.
1963 90 hp Johnson. (Uncles motor) Would take us to his cabin 3-5 times per a summer. It was a "Big Gun" for 1963. It ran until a bolt backed out from under the fly wheel in 1985.
1975 25 hp Johnson, Ran this one for many many hours of sking, boarding. It finally started jumping out of gear in 1989.
1975 15 hp Johnson, Sold it to our uncle do to the lack of boat to use it on. (still runnig today)
1976 6 hp Johnson, Still running today.Sitting in the shed. No boat to put it on.
1979 115 hp Johnson, Dad bought this one when we bought the cabin. It popped the top ring out of the RH top piston in 1981, Blew the left hand head gasket in 1983.
1984 Yamaha 90 hp, Still running today. The only problem was the seals under the water pump filled the lower unit with water and we forgot to drain it in 1987. The lower unit housing froze and cracked. Replaced the housing and installed the seals in reverse order to factory (in to impellar out to unit) no water since.
1988 20 hp Suzuki, A great motor a great motor and super easy on fuel. Traded it for next motor and boat.(still running today)
1991 Suzuki 30 hp which worked great but was super heavy for a 30 hp. traded that boat for next motor and boat. (not sure on where abouts)
1995 Yamaha Pro 50 I love this boat package, Great fuel mileage and 43 mph. Eventually the family out grew it, but we have sinse grew back into this size with gas prices. (still in use today)
1998 130 hp Yamaha. Our current motor. Other than some carb clogging debris, and not just varnish, sometimes the red sealant that they use around the needle and seat. Still in use today, 5mpg (imp) 4 mpg (US) at a cruising speed of 38 mph. The only other problem was the lift oil pump quit in 1999.
2000 30 hp Yamaha, (still in use) Runs great but does have the same lower unit seal problem, water pump pumping water into lower unit. Fixing that this weekend. Starts easy after adjusting "Air Screw" it does troll all day without a hiccup. Other than that a mouse hibernated in it 1 winter and chewed some wires.
There is my life on the water, how about yours?
