A neighbour gave me a 6hp Evinrude (1977 by the serial #) and I got it running, but there was no water coming out what I assume was the p-hole at the end of a tube attached to cylinder and exiting at rear bottom engine cover. Is there a thermostat that may not have reached opening temp. after several minutes of idle to mid revs? The engine smelled hot but was not too hot to touch the heads. I want to take it to the Lake next weekend but I don't want to cook the engine.
Thanks.

Was water coming out the back thats what matters i have a 79 6hp evinrude did same thing i didnt even know it had a tell tail so if water is coming out back see how warm water is then try spraying water up tail tell i know its a little hole rev engine up to while doing it put some pressure. Spray hard it could be clogged as soon as i sprayed mine water started dripping out it still may need new impeller even if water comeing out back if its been sitting the rubber can get britle but if you rev it up water shoots out back your good if not replace impeller

Yes, that's the telltale, I'd remove the tube and try blowing through it, it may be plugged. Are you running it on muffs? If you're running it in a tank make sure the water level is high enough. Probably needs to be 4-6" above cav plate.
