The motor is a 2001 Suzuki DF70.

Yesterday we where trolling at very low idle, we then pulled the lines up and started cruising at about 1/4 throttle, after about five minuets of this a buzzer sounds, and the temp idiot lights comes on. We look back, its pissing water, but not as strong as normal. Putted over to a broken down dock, shut it down and tied up.

The block was hotter then normal, we tilted the motor all the way up to check the water intake, nothing blocking it we could see. I then started the motor again, it cranked for a while longer then normal, but started. Once started it pumped water strong again and the temp light was off. I started backing out from the dock and saw a plastic bag in front of where we where docked, so I'm assuming the bag was blocking the water intake.

How hot do these motors get for the buzzer and light to come on? Could we have done any damage? Anything I should look for?

As long as you shut it down pretty quick and if there was some water going through it I say your OK. Might do a compression check but if you could hold your hand on the block for any length of time it wasn't that hot.
Good Luck!!

Thanks,
there was some water coming out, I shut it down about 30 seconds after the buzzer came on and I could put my hand on the block, sounds like I'm all set.

Thanks.

Hmmm. The computer in mine (1993/225) limits the revs to something low if the temp alarm goes off. Does this imply the engine can run with low/no water at low rpm's? If not, why doesn't the system just shut down the engine on a hi-temp situation?

Ryan T.: Your engine may not have actually overheated. The computer knows how rapidly the engine temperature should rise within a given number of seconds. If it goes up too quickly, the alarm goes off before the engine actually overheats. If the engine had actually overheated, the alarm would have still been on when you restarted the engine.

swist: It's better to limp home with a damaged engine than get stranded on the water.
