temp gauge not working..

1998 Mercury 150efi

I tested the gauge and the sender and confirmed both are working....When I install it and run the motor it does nothing!
I think that it is not making good contact with the head...Should there be any kind of heat transfer compound on it?

Which sender? Port side or Starboard?

It is the Port side, The sender with 4 wires.

Good ground on both? Thats really all its going to be.

Gotta ask. Pluged inta tha right wire stickin' outta tha male end of tha harness?

Good thing it quit as now fine time to install a water pressure guage.....

If I put it in hot water it goes up..... I think that it's just not making good contact with the head. I plan to put a water pressure gauge in but I am at the stage of getting what's there to work properly before I add anything!
